LOUISE GUY POETRY PRIZE

In celebration of Louise Guy

Alberta Wilderness Association Announces its 2nd Annual

Louise Guy Poetry Prize

The Climb and Run for Wilderness Poetry Contest

Entry Deadline - April 12, 2012 at 10 a.m. MDT

AWA is proud to announce the second year of its annual Louise Guy Poetry Prize. Before entering, please review the following Call for Submissions.

Call for Submissions - Louise Guy Poetry Prize

The poetry contest is in honour of Louise Guy, a truly remarkable woman who at 92 was a role model to young and old alike. Her athletic strength and endurance was exceeded only by her appreciation for wildness, wildlife and wild water and how willingly she gave her beautiful smile for the joy of others.

The Louise Guy Poetry Prize is part of our annual Earth Day celebration.  It is a competition for all ages and each year we will have the winning poem transcribed and displayed on the walls of the Calgary Tower stairwells as a lasting tribute to Louise, her intellect, her strength and her love.  The winning poem will also be published in the Wild Lands Advocate, AWA’s outstanding wilderness news journal.

Contest Rules 2012

Theme:

Henry David Thoreau (1817 – 1862) wrote: “The West of which I speak is but another name for the Wild, and what I have been preparing to say is, that in Wildness is the preservation of the World. Every tree sends its fibers forth in search of the Wild. The cities import it at any price. Men plow and sail for it. From the forest and wilderness come the tonics and barks which brace mankind...

We would like you to use wildness as the theme of your poem. Wildness means many different things to everyone and all interpretations are welcome entries. We welcome poems that celebrate the spiritual well-being of wildness, the brutal reality of it, and the gentle constantly changing and adapting force it is. These are all things we believe Louise knew so well. People of all ages are invited to submit entries.

Entry Fee: $20.00 and must be paid using our online secure service. You will be able to upload your poetry contest entry at the same time as you pay your entry fee.

Submission date: Entries must be submitted electronically by April 12, 2012, 10:00 a.m. MDT.  Late entries will not be accepted and no submissions will be returned.

Format:  Poetry entries must be single spaced. No author’s name on entry, but include a cover page with your entry that identifies you and your contact information including your name, address, email, phone and the title of your entry. Page size 8.5" x 11", all margins: 1.5", 12 pt. Times New Roman font.

Judging: Judging will be done by a panel of AWA members.

Winner: The winner will be announced at the Awards Ceremony of the Climb and Run for Wilderness on April 21, 2012, at the Calgary Tower at 1:30 p.m. Short listed entries may be selected for publication in the Wild Lands Advocate to round out an issue; the Wild Lands Advocate does not pay authors.

The Louise Guy Poetry Prize: In addition to having their poem published in the Wild Lands Advocate, and posted in the stairwell of the Calgary Tower, the winner will receive a Climb for Wilderness medallion, a subscription to the Wild Lands Advocate and an AWA “VIP” Climb for Wilderness cap.
